Osteopathy and back pain:
As osteopaths, we hear on a daily basis the famous question: "My back aches, can you help me? ¨ The back is an area of the body that is extremely stressed and too often damaged for various reasons (physical inactivity, too fast return to training, lack of ergonomics at work, wear and tear, stress etc). And yes, osteopathy can help and relieve you, in most cases! |
Let us begin with the lumbar region. Formerly thought of as "kidney pain", the lumbar region is located between the end of your ribcage and the beginning of the pelvis, hence the hips. Very often, the last 2 lumbar vertebrae, L4 and L5, will be at fault because they are attached by ligaments at the level of your hips. They increase the chances of causing a more problematic imbalance with pain and symptoms that can affect your legs (muscle tension, tingling and numbness).
And when one says hips also one can't forget the sacrum! This is why the lumbar pains seem obscure to many people: they rarely come alone. Because of their impact on other supporting structures (which is thus solid and not moving), a painful and disabling mixture can be obtained which may even affect other systems such as the gynecological system in women, the digestive system, postural disorders and fatigue.
During the osteopathy session, your osteopath will assess the condition and mobility of painful joints, but also the condition and mobility of those that compensate and cause other associated symptoms such as: the rib cage and your cervical vertebrae. Your body works very hard to keep you in balance and the protective mechanisms that it triggers can worsen if the physiological chains are not restored. The purpose of the consultation is to restore harmony in the various systems of your body so that the tensions are released and ultimately to make the pain disappear.
Your osteopath can advise you on some changes in your lifestyle to help revive your vitality. It can also offer you a follow-up of prevention, if you suffer from recurrent or acute pain. Take the health of your back in your hands and come and meet one of our osteopaths!
